Assistant Plant Operator
Fargo, ND
This is a seasonal, full-time position. Season runs approximately April-Nov
Key duties include:
Responsible for assisting the overall daily operation of a hot-mix asphalt plant with computerized Systems equipment. Duties include plant set-up and tear down, receipt and shipment of raw materials and asphalt products, manufacturing asphalt products, lab testing, inspection and record keeping and maintenance of the equipment in the plant. Must be willing to meet and follow all safety and company policy/procedure requirements. A valid driver’s license is necessary to drive company vehicles and equipment.
Wages: $27.65-$34.00 per hour(DOE) plus $19.28 per hour fringe (covers Health insurance premiums, life insurance & Pension).
Education and/or Experience:
High School diploma or equivalent required. Must possess at least two years of maintenance/repair at an asphalt plant. Previous experience operating as asphalt plant desired. Good mechanical repair skills, math skills and communication skills are necessary. Must have the ability to work in confined spaces. Skills in using computers for data entry and retrieval are needed.

$350 per week per diem to use for housing of your choice. Most employees have their own campers
Job Summary: Responsible for the overall daily operation of hot-mix asphalt plant with computerized equipment controls. Duties include receipt and shipment of raw materials and asphalt products, manufacturing of asphalt products, lab testing, inspection and recordkeeping requirements, computer oriented tasks and the maintenance of the equipment in the plant. Reports to the Superintendent/Foreman. The highest quality of workmanship is expected in assigned paving projects while working in a safe, productive and professional manner.

In charge of plant setup and plant tear down and daily reporting of time and material records.
Input numeric data and operational date into a computer system to effectively operate primary or secondary crushing, or other plant equipment to meet site production needs.
Batch asphalt load according to specifications. Monitor material temperature and quality.
Schedule and ensure timely delivery of oil, fuel, aggregates, admixtures and supplies to plant.
Operate controls for loading trucks with material.
Report mechanical failures and material inconsistencies to Project Superintendent and/or Project Manager.
Perform light plant maintenance, conduct routine inspection and preventive maintenance and clean equipment.
May run a front end loader or other material handling equipment to charge the plant with aggregate and other materials.
Inform the Superintendent and Mechanic crew about repair and maintenance needs for equipment on assigned jobs.
Ensure that safety, compliance, environmental and OSHA requirements are followed at all times.
Relate to co-workers and the general public in a courteous and respectful manner.
Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with training or other duties.
Abilities Required:
Ability to meet attendance schedule and to report to assigned job site in proper attire.
Ability to read and comprehend instructions, write, and speak English.
Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
Ability to understand appropriate uses of mix designs.
Ability to operate equipment under varying work conditions and the ability to do some manual labor requiring periods of extensive physical exertion and potential exposure to adverse weather conditions.
Ability to learn, understand and abide by Company policies and safety rules. Participate in weekly safety meetings.
Ability to work well with others and willingness to learn and take direction.
Ability and willingness to travel for extended periods of time and work long hours to perform the job duties.
Ability to pass a pre-employment urine drug screen and submit to random drug and/or alcohol testing during employment.
Possession of or ability to obtain a valid driver’s license: CDL A preferred.
Physical Demands: The physical demand characteristics described here are those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms about their shoulders and use hands and fingers to handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls. Must be able to climb man ladder. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Vision abilities required are close, distance, color and peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.
Working Conditions: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Work is regularly performed in a control room setting around industrial and electrical equipment, frequently exposed to outside weather conditions including rain and extreme heat. The employee is frequently exposed to vibration, dust and asphalt. The noise level in the environment is usually moderate to loud.
Experience: HS diploma or equivalent GED required: minimum two to three years of related experience and/or training performing batching, blending or quality assurance functions in asphalt and road construction. Knowledge of mix designing and familiar with aggregate gradations is helpful. Computer batching skills required.

Shop Mechanic - Heavy Equipment

JAMESTOWN LOCATION!
Border States Paving, Inc. is a regional paving company located in Fargo, ND and Jamestown, ND and has an opening for a Mechanic (Heavy Equipment) to perform routine maintenance and repair of various types of heavy equipment and trucks and to assist with maintenance of asphalt plant in JAMESTOWN, ND. May operate equipment to diagnose problems and inspect for defects. Welding, hydraulic, and electrical experience preferred. Moderate to heavy lifting, bending, reaching and stooping are required. High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required. Must have a valid driver’s license; CDL A preferred.
Must pass required Pre-employment urine drug screen. Must demonstrate a strong commitment to safety and be flexible to work overtime and weekends during summer months.
Excellent wages ($31.60-35.00 per hour DOE) and $21.90 per hour fringe (Health Insurance Premiums paid 100%) and other benefits are offered.

Project Manager - Highway Asphalt Paving Operations
Regional - Travel Required
Responsibilities:
- Construction project management for the Highway Paving Operations
- Oversees Paving Plant Production, Paving Crews, Trucking and Materials Management for DOT Highway Construction Projects.
- Must complete on time accurate records to certify work performed weekly;
- Work as a team with project personnel to provide technical advice, resolve issues, and provide solutions.
- Handle Direct Communications with DOT personnel on project details.
- Complying, Enforce, Direct Project and Company Safety Policy Requirements.
- Position answers directly to Operations Manager
Requirements:
- Experience in Highway Construction, Asphalt Paving, Materials Production or Engineering Preferred.
- Strong Personal Communication Skills
- Detail Orientated
- Self-directed
- Strong PC skills including MS Word, Excel software specific to the highway heavy industry
- HCSS Heavy Bid and Heavy Job Experience preferred but not required
- Above average math skills
- Ability to work with others, learn on the job and follow directions.
- Mechanical Aptitude and Good Driving Record
- Must pass urine drug test
- Position is on the road and extensive summer travel will be required.

Where do you work?
We work throughout North Dakota and South Dakota and in western Minnesota
How many hours per day do you work?
The summer is short, so we work from sun up to sun down each day. Daily hours can range from 12-14 hours early or late in the season and can be around 16 hours during mid-summer. Weekly hours range from 60-75 hours per week.
When does the season start and end?
Generally, the season begins in mid to late April until mid-November. This is weather dependent.
What happens during the off season?
When we are done for the year, seasonal workers enter seasonal layoff status from Border States Paving and become eligible to draw unemployment.
What are prevailing wages?
Pay rates that contractors must pay workers on certain projects. We pay ND Davis Bacon (prevailing) wages on all projects, even if there is no requirement to pay or if the requirement is less in another State.
